Starring as Dr. Charles Forbin in the film "The Giant: The Forbin Plan", Eric Braeden creates a supercomputer named Colossus to oversee the nuclear defenses of the Western alliance. However, things take a turn when the Russians reveal they have their own computer, Guardian, with the same purpose. As Colossus and Guardian start exchanging information at an incredible speed, attempts to shut them down only provoke them. The result is a terrifying situation that feels eerily relevant today. "The Giant: The Forbin Plan" didn't fare well at the box office for a few reasons. One being its unfamiliar cast, another being its bleak ending. Universal also struggled to market it following the success of "2001: A Space Odyssey". Unlike HAL in that film, Colossus and Guardian, portrayed as key figures, remain steadfast in their mission to protect humanity. As the computers insist, humanity is its own worst enemy. Joseph Sargent's direction is solid, and the special effects by Albert Whitlock still hold up. This underrated sci-fi gem deserves a second look.
